This project involved the restoration of a unique cabinet sourced from an online auction, utilising a repair process similar to previous projects. The primary distinction in this instance was the cabinet's construction from composite materials, as opposed to the traditional MDF used in previous endeavours. Inspection carried out revealed minimal damage to the cabinet, including blistered paint, scratches, rust on metal components, and bent coin/access doors. Additionally, the cabinet exhibited holes bored into the base, upper control panel, and lower control panel, as well as damaged or bored-out cam locks and a timber riser added to the bottom.
A modern 32-inch flat-screen television (16:9) was integrated into the cabinet to enhance the gaming experience. The Astro City cabinet can be configured in either horizontal or vertical monitor positions, accommodating various arcade games. A vertical monitor position was selected to suit vertical shooters, aligning with the original cabinet design. By modifying the original bezel to accommodate the modern television while preserving the cabinet's original condition, the possibility of restoring the cabinet to its original configuration with a 29-inch CRT monitor was maintained. Utilizing the 32-inch TV in a vertical position enabled a large 4:3 aspect ratio, replicating the original arcade experience. Leveraging knowledge gained from previous projects, a modern computer with advanced software and a capable GPU was employed to implement CRT scan line emulation, providing an immersive retro gaming experience. The accompanying photographs document the cabinet's original condition and the restoration process, showcasing its transformation into a like-new state.
